Part P is....
Part P relates to a section of the building regulations for England. It is designed to provide safe regulations to protect homeowners. Most importantly, it requires that most electrical works carried out in the home must be carried out and signed off by a suitably registered electrician or electrical contractor. If this cannot be applied to, the electrical work must be inspected by a building control officer, who will usually ask for a competent electrician or contractor to provide a relevant electrical test certificate.
In basic terms
Put into basic terms, this means that any homeowner or landlord, needs to have any works which should be registered, carried out by an electrician or electrical contractor registered with an organisation such as NICEIC or Napit.
What will happen if the works are not 'signed off'?
Firstly, who ever carried out the works, if caught, could get a large fine for not registering the works. Secondly, it may become difficult to sell your property, as Part P certificates are now often asked for when selling your property.
Why is Part P so important?
Its designed to make all domestic electrical installations are as safe as possible. This should over time, drastically decrease the number of fatal accidents and reduced the number of electrical fires.
